Birdwatching Tours

We offer 2 to 4 day trips, everything included.

Our tours are centered in the Albufera Natural Park (ANP), a fresh water lagoon and its surrounding ecosystem. Our year-round schedule allows for a wide span of birdwatching opportunities in all seasons.
The longer, 4-day standard tour features a 150 km escapade to the Special Bird Protection Area of Pétrola-Corral Rubio, a lagoons and steppes area in Albacete, rich in steppe birds as well as inland water species in wintering quarters.
Accommodation and dinner are provided in 3-star hotels in the coastal town of Cullera, 40 km south of Valencia city.
Taylor-made itineraries are also available. Tell us your specific requirements regarding length and place of choice and we’ll find the best solution for a brilliant birdwatching experience.

1. PRENUPTIAL MIGRATORY PASSAGE (March-May) THROUGH THE MEDITERRANEAN AND SOUTHEAST SPAIN
AREAS TO VISIT:  ALBUFERA LAKE AND MARSHES AND INLAND  LAKE AND STEPPES COMPLEX
Day 1:

12:00 h. Meeting at the HOTEL. Tour around paddy fields or the coastal area to the Brosquil and Estany de Cullera.

13:30 h. Tasting of rice dishes (at the rice artisans club: restaurant “Arroz de Cullera Artesanos”).

16:00 h.  Visit to areas of the marsh of Cullera/Sueca, Estany de San Llorenç. The visit will finish at the lighthouse or, in case of bad weather, the Bay of Cullera. There will be opportunities  to observe different species of typical passerine birds from the Mediterranean avifauna such as the Thekla Lark, Common Shrike, Sardinian Warbler, Dartford Warbler, Hoopoe, Spotless Starling …  Depending on the day, the passage of other passerine birds is also important: Subalpine Warbler, Barn and Red-rumped Swallow, Common House Martin, Spotted  Flycatcher,…

18:00 h. Return to hotel. Free time to visit the historic  town of Cullera and its castle (not included).

Dinner and stay at hotel.

Day 2:

7.30 pm.  Departure from Cullera after breakfast.   Tour by vehicle through the marshes to the Palmar. Depending on the day this journey could be through the areas of paddy fields that have water and therefore the presence of birds. The journey will be among rice paddies of Cullera, Sollana, Sueca and la Muntanyeta dels Sants to reach the Tancat de Milia, ending in the Racó de L’olla where we will stop at the observatories of the birds reserve. During the tour is possible to observe Black-winged Stilt, Common Avocet, Little Egret, Squacco Heron, Purple Heron, Little Bittern, Grey Heron, Glossy Ibis, Cattle Egret, Black Tern, Plover Tern, Common Tern, Gull-billed Tern and birds of prey like the Booted Eagle, Common Buzzard or European honey-buzzard and Osprey in migration.

Picnic meal and walking tour by la Devesa and the Estany de Pujol to stop and observe the colony of Audouin’s  Seagull. From there to the dunes and coastal front of la Devesa where you can observe sea birds on migration in the viewpoint of El Pujol and take spectacular pictures of the sunset.

20.30 Return to hotel.  Dinner and accommodation.

Day 3:

Departure at 6.30 pm from Cullera after breakfast. We will go towards the lagoon complex of Petrola-Corral Rubio where a local guide will show us around the different lakes of this protected area where we will observe species such as a Ruff, different species of Sandpipers, Plovers etc. In the surrounding areas  there are also other waterfowl and very interesting steppe birds are concentrated such as Great Bustard, Iberian ganga, Stone Curlew, Little Bustard, …

Picnic meal. (Optional: lunch in a typical restaurant of the area. NOT INCLUDED). Return to hotel about 17.30.

Dinner and stay.

Day 4:

At 7.30 am, after breakfast, we will go to the paddy fields in the northern part of the Park and the Ratlla Tancats where the Common Collared Pratincole nests. From there to the port of Catarroja, where we will go by boat to the Tancat de la Pipa: an artificial wetland, result of the project of restoration of habitats, which contains a set of typical freshwater habitats, of the Albufera but which are scarce in the rest of the Park. It has the character of “Reserve Area” and in it they can find some species difficult to see in other places. Common Bittern, Bittern, Zitting Cisticola, Moustached Warbler, Great Reed Warbler, Savi´s Warbler, Whiskered Tern…  then  the breeding season begins and they also mingle with other migratory species.

13:00 h. Return to hotel and end of our services.

 

2. BREEDING SEASON (March-May)
AREAS TO VISIT:  ALBUFERA LAKE AND MARSHES AND INLAND  LAKE AND STEPPES COMPLEX
Day 1:

12:00 h. Meeting at the HOTEL. Tour around paddy fields or the coastal area until the Brosquil and Estany de Cullera.

13:30 h. Tasting of rice dishes (at the rice artisans club: restaurant “Arroz de Cullera ). Back to the hotel to rest.

17:00h Tour by vehicle around the paddy fields in the wetlands of Cullera and Sueca, where a good number of birds is easy to find especially Herons, Gulls and Waders. In the afternoon visit to the areas of mount El Cabecol and the Bassa de San Llorenç and the faro de Cullera. Although heat can be a constraint there are better conditions of light and wind to see seabirds

19:00h Return to hotel. Free time to visit the historic town of Cullera and its castle (not included). Dinner and stay at hotel.

Day 2:

7:00h After breakfast, tour vehicle from Cullera and the marsh to el Palmar. Depending on the weather and time this tour could continue through the non-cultivated areas of paddy fields with birds presence between Cullera, Sueca and Sollana and we will reach the Tancat de Milia. During the tour it is possible to observe  Little Egret, Squacco Heron,Common Heron, Purple Heron, Cattle Egret, Whiskered Tern, Gull- billed Tern, Purple Swamphen.

12:00 h. Return to hotel.  Lunch and rest.

17:00 h. Departure towards the observatories in the reserve of birds of the Racó de L’olla, there we will go on foot by the Estany de Pujol to observe the colony of  Seagulls of Audouinand we will visit the dunes and coastal front of la Devesa. With the likely presence of Kentish Plover, Gull Slender-billed Gull Sardinian, Little Common Tern, Sandwich Tern Plover, Common tern.

We will continue  the afternoon by the paddy fields in the North to finish in the viewpoint of El Pujol to take spectacular pictures of the sunset.

21:00 h. Return to hotel. Dinner and stay.

Day 3:

Departure at 6:00 h. from Cullera after breakfast. We will go to the lagoon complex of Petrola – Corral Rubio where a local guide will show us around  the different lakes of this protected area where we will observe species, such as White-headed Duck, Flamingo, Great Bustard, Little Bustard, Lesser Krestel, different species of Larks,, Bee-eater, Ratchet

Return to hotel about 17:30.

Dinner and stay at hotel.

Day 4:

7:00 am, after breakfast, we will go to the paddy fields in the North of the Park and to the Tancats the Ratlla and the port of Catarroja, from where we will do a boat trip to the Tancat de la Pipa: an artificial wetland, result of the project of restoration of habitats, which contains a set of typical freshwater habitats of the Albufera, but which are scarce in the rest of the Park. 3. POST-BREEDING MIGRATION (September-October)

AREAS TO VISIT:  ALBUFERA LAKE AND MARSHES, NORTHERN COASTAL  WETLANDS  AND INLAND LAKE AND STEPPES COMPLEX

Day 1:

12:00 h. Meeting at the HOTEL. Tour by the paddy fields or the coastal area until the Brosquil and Estany de Cullera.

13:30 h. Tasting of rice dishes (at the rice artisans club: restaurant “Arroz de Cullera ). Back to hotel to rest.

16:00 h. Visit to the areas of the marsh of Cullera/Sueca, Estany de San Llorenç to finish at the lighthouse or, in case of bad weather, the Bay of Cullera. There will be opportunity to observe different species of passerine birds typical from the Mediterranean such as the Thekla Lark, common Shrike, Sardinian Warbler, Subalpine Warbler, Dartford Warbler, Red-rumpeddaurica, Lapwing, Spotless Starling and we will look for the presence in the sea of the scarce Balearic Shearwater…

About 18:00 h. Return to hotel. Free time to visit the historic town of Cullera and its castle (tickets not included).

Dinner and stay at hotel.

Day 2:

7:30h Departure from Cullera after breakfast. Tour vehicle from Cullera and the marsh to El Palmar. Depending on the day this journey can take us through the areas of paddy fields that have water and therefore the presence of birds. The trip will go among rice paddies of Cullera, Sueca and Sollana, reaching La Ratlla and the Tancat de Milia, ending in the Racó de L’olla where we will stop at the observatories of birds reserve.

Picnic-meal provided by the hotel. La Devesa and the Estany de Pujol walking tour to stop in the observation of the colony of Audouin’s Seagull and from there to dunes and coastal front of la Devesa where you can watch birds in migration (Gulls, Waders, Northen Gannet,…).

Day 3:

Departure at 6.30 pm from Cullera after breakfast. We will go to the lagoon complex of Petrola – Corral Rubio where a local guide will show us around the different lakes of this protected area where we will observe species such as a Ruff, different species of Sandpipers and Plovers  etc. besides the lagoons  host other waterfowl and in the surrounding areas very interesting steppe birds are concentrated such as Great Bustard, Iberian ganga, Little Bustard, Stone Curlew,

Picnic-meal. Return  to hotel about 17.30h.

Day 4:

7:30 pm  After breakfast, we will go to the Marjal dels Moros (Sagunto) about 70 km away.  There we will make a circular walking tour from the coastline where you will be able to observe waders and gulls and we will enter inside the area of Marsh where we can admire the White-headed Duck  and other numerous species of aquatic birds.

Depending on the time of the departure of the flights, we will finish the day with a rise in vehicle to the viewpoint of the Garbi to contemplate one of the best views of the Valencian coast and where we can try to see the Bonelli´s Eagle  and the migratory passage of Bee-eater, Common House Martin,, Common Swift, Palid Swift, Red-rumped Swallow and raptors

Picnic-meal  en route. Return to hotel and farewell.

4. WINTERING (November-February)  IN ALBUFERA NATURAL PARK AND THE EAST OF IBERIAN PENINSULA  (4 days 4 * hotel)  from: 562 €
AREAS TO VISIT:  ALBUFERA LAKE AND MARSHES, NORTHERN COASTAL WETLANDS  AND INLAND LAKE AND STEPPES COMPLEX
Day 1:

12:00 h. Meeting at the HOTEL. Tour by the paddy fields or the coastal area until the Brosquil and Estany de Cullera.

13:30 h. Tasting of rice dishes (at the rice artisans club: restaurant “Arroz de Cullera ).

15:30h  Tour to the marsh areas of Cullera / Sueca, Lake of San Llorenç to finish at the lighthouse or, if the weather is bad , at Cullera Bay. We will possibly observe different species of typical passerine Mediterranean avifauna such as Thekla Lark, Shrike , Sardinian Warbler , Subalpine Warbler , Dartford Warbler , Red-rumped Swallow Hoopoe, Spotless Starling and we  look for the presence in the sea of little Balearic Shearwater and  possible wintering such as Common Scoter or Shag .

Return to hotel at 17.30h.

Free time to visit the historic  town of Cullera and its castle (tickets not included).

Dinner and stay at hotel.

Day 2:

Departure from Cullera at 8.00h, after breakfast. Tour by vehicle around Muntanyeta dels Sants and Sueca marsh to Palmar and Raco de l’ Olla to observe ducks and other waterfowl. Visit to the Bird Reserve observatories Raco de l’ Olla. At this time there are spectacular concentrations of Cormorant, Glossy Ibis and several species of ducks such as Red-crested Pochard and Northern Shoveler. Picnic-meal and hike along the Lake of Devesa and Pujol to stop to observe waders and from there to the dunes and the coastal front Devesa where you can see sea birds such as Common Scoter, Balearic Shearwater or different species of gulls . Sunset at the veranda of the Pujol to take spectacular pictures and the arrival of hundreds of Marsh Harriers to roost at the Fang Mata.

Return to hotel about 18.30 h.

Dinner and stay at hotel.

Day 3:

Departure at 6.30 am from Cullera after breakfast. We will go to the lagoon complex Pétrola -Corral Rubio where we expect a local guide who will show us around through several lagoons in this protected area where we can observe species such as Great and Little Bustards , Great Shor-toed Lark ,Calandra Lark , Black-necked Grebe , Red-crested Pochard , Northern Shoveler and Common Pochard .

Picnic-meal. (OPTIONAL: Lunch in a typical restaurant in the area. NOT INCLUDED).

Return to hotel about 17.30 h .

Dinner and stay at hotel.

Day 4:

8:00 h. After breakfast, we will go to the Marsh dels Moros (Sagunto) located about 70 km away. There we will do a circular walk from the coastline where we can see waders and gulls and we will enter the interior of the marsh area where we can contemplate the little duck -headed and many other species of waterfowl. Depending on the departure time of the flights, we will end the day with rising by vehicle the viewpoint of Garbi to see one of the best views of the Valencian coast, where we will try to observe the scarce Bonelli Eagle and end of the migratory path of Bee-Eater, Barn Swallow, Common House Martin, Common Swift, Pallid Swift, Red-rumped Swallow and diurnal raptors (November).

Picnic meal. (OPTIONAL meal at a restaurant). Due to the decrease in daylight hours from December to February the rise to Garbi view point may be suspended and then  return directly from the Marsh dels Moros.

About 17:30h. Return to hotel and end of our services.
